Vietnam update is designed to support the Rough Guide to Vietnam, which I co-authored. My aim is to provide a place in which to gather incoming information between editions while also making it available to anyone thinking of visiting Vietnam. A spot of history ..... My first project for Rough Guides was Vietnam. I arrived there in 1994, the year the US trade embargo was lifted. Foreign investment was flooding in, the economy was booming and a heady optimism characterised what was hailed as "the new Asian tiger". It was a fantastic - and fascinating - time to explore this country emerging from years of war and the privations of the socialist era. Economic reforms had unleashed an incredible, pent-up hunger to make money; it was like lifting the lid off a kettle. Since then, thanks to the financial crisis in Asia and a wavering leadership, much of Vietnam's early, over-hyped promise remains unfulfilled. Nevertheless, the energy is still there on the streets and Vietnam remains an absorbing, if sometimes difficult, country to visit.
